Caring for Tatami in Indian Climates

India's diverse climates ask more of natural materials than Japan's temperate seasons — but with considered care, Tatami thrives in homes from Mumbai to Delhi.

Humidity & monsoon

During monsoon months, ensure adequate ventilation in the room. Avoid placing mats directly against exterior walls that may transfer moisture. A dehumidifier in particularly damp spaces can extend the life of Igusa fibres considerably.

Sunlight

Prolonged direct sunlight will fade and dry Igusa prematurely. Use sheer curtains or position mats away from south-facing windows that receive harsh afternoon sun.

Cleaning

Vacuum gently along the weave direction using a soft brush attachment. Wipe spills immediately with a dry cloth — never use wet mops or chemical cleaners on natural Igusa.
