Which Grass Mat? Yoga, Meditation, Pooja & Sleep
Nine searches in India often mean five different products: authentic yoga mat, authentic yoga grass mat, yoga grass mat, eco friendly yoga mat for yoga, traditional grass mat, grass mat for meditation, grass mat for pooja, grass mat for sleeping, and natural reed mat. Ranking pages usually sell one fibre and treat the rest as synonyms. They are not.
Tatami Mat sells two materials only: Japanese Igusa tatami, and Indian Madurkathi reed. We do not sell Darbha/Kusha, organic-cotton yoga rugs, or jute-and-rubber travel mats. This guide tells you which search should land where — and when we are the wrong shop.
Quick chooser

| Yoga grass mat / authentic yoga grass mat | Darbha or Sambu roll-ups | Yoga Igusa tatami if you want a permanent grass floor |
| Eco friendly yoga mat for yoga | Jute + natural rubber | Igusa as a plastic-free practice floor, not a class-bag mat |

| Grass mat for meditation | Darbha / Isha-style asans | Meditation Igusa for a fixed corner |

Authentic yoga mat — usually not grass
The phrase authentic yoga mat is dominated by handloom organic cotton, plant-dyed in Tamil Nadu, often with a rubber underside. That is a legitimate product. It is not Igusa, not Darbha, and not Madurkathi. If that is what you want, buy from a cotton-rug maker. If you typed it because you want a plant-fibre yoga floor without PVC, keep reading.
Yoga grass mat and authentic yoga grass mat
A yoga grass mat in Indian search results is usually Darbha (Kusha) or Sambu grass woven on a handloom, about 180 × 68 cm, sometimes rubber-backed. Practitioners like the scent and the Vedic story. It is a thin rug. Japanese Igusa tatami is a thicker rush-grass floor with a core and heri. Both are “grass.” Only one is tatami.
Choose Yoga Tatami when you want an authentic yoga grass mat that stays in a room. Choose Darbha when you want a sacred, portable roll-up. We sell the first, not the second.
Eco friendly yoga mat for yoga
The commercial SERP for eco friendly yoga mat for yoga is jute-faced natural rubber — Proyog, Mandu, and similar. Those mats win on grip and travel. Igusa wins on being a plastic-free floor with humidity buffering and no rubber smell. Use both if you practise at a studio and at home: rubber in the bag, Igusa on the bedroom floor.
Traditional grass mat
A traditional grass mat in India can mean Pattamadai korai, West Bengal Madurkathi, Assam/Cooch Behar Sitalpati, or Japanese Igusa. Asking “traditional” without naming the craft is how shoppers buy the wrong plant. Our Traditional Tatami collection is Igusa imported from Japan. Our Madurkathi collection is Indian reed. We do not sell Pattamadai or Sitalpati.
Grass mat for meditation
A grass mat for meditation often ranks compact Darbha seats — Isha, YogaKargha, and temple-shop asans. Those are designed to sit on, not to define a room. Igusa meditation tatami is a floor plane: you step onto it, sit, and leave it in place. If you travel to a hall and need a sacred grass square in a bag, buy Darbha. If you want a home corner, open Meditation Tatami.
Grass mat for pooja
A grass mat for pooja is, in ritual terms, Kusha / Darbha — used as an aasan for havan, japa, and daily puja. Madurkathi is not Kusha. We will not pretend otherwise. Households still use a larger reed mat beside a shrine for sitting and guests. That is a room use, not a Vedic substitute. Shop Madurkathi reed mats for the room; buy Kusha from a puja supplier for the aasan.
Grass mat for sleeping
A grass mat for sleeping splits cleanly:
- Japanese Igusa — structured, thicker, used under a futon or as a firm floor bed. See Japanese Sleep Tatami.
- Madurkathi reed — lighter, foldable, cooler in a spare room or on a visit. See the Reed Sleep Mat in Madurkathi & Reed Mats.
Both beat foam for airflow in warm weather. Neither is waterproof. Keep them dry in monsoon months.
Natural reed mat
Natural reed mat is the cleanest query in this set. In India it means Madurkathi (sometimes korai). Japanese Igusa is rush, often mistranslated as “reed.” If you want reed craft, stay on the Madurkathi collection. If you want Japanese rush, use Traditional or Sleep Igusa — and ignore listings that call Igusa “reed” to look exotic.
What we will not do
We will not title a Madurkathi product as Japanese Igusa. We will not sell Darbha under a tatami URL. We will not rank one page for all nine keywords. Each collection owns the queries it can fulfil; this journal page exists so the leftover queries have an honest answer.
Ready to choose? Start with yoga grass mats, a grass mat for meditation, a grass mat for sleeping in Igusa, or a natural reed mat.
